I received a BA in government from Cornell University and a MD from the University of Vermont College of Medicine.  I completed my internal medicine internship and residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and my fellowship training in the Harvard Combined Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship program.  During my fellowship, I obtained a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health.  My primary research interests are exploring the association between COPD and cardiovascular disease and the impact of lung volume reduction on cardiopulmonary physiology.  My work combines retrospective analyses of large scale databases (i.e., National Emphysema Treatment Trial, Framingham Heart Study, COPDGene) with prospective clinical studies of novel therapies such as endoscopic lung volume reduction.  I run several COPD clinical trials at BWH and have been awarded a K23 in which I propose to better elucidate the mechanical nature of dynamic cardiopulmonary interdependence using static CT-based metrics.  In addition to my clinical and translational research, I attend in the medical ICU, maintain an active outpatient pulmonary clinic, direct the BWH Faulkner Hospital pulmonary rehabilitation program, and serve as core faculty for respiratory pathophysiology at HMS.
